The other day, a fairly large burrow appeared in quite a wild patch of the garden. Then, weirdly, one morning it had disappeared! It looked like the hole had been filled in and smoothed over.
After a bit of head scratching, I had a look online and apparently rabbits cover over their burrows when there are baby rabbits in there, to keep them safe from predators.
The wildlife camera is now set up in that area and I think we can safely say it was a rabbit (see photo above). We’ll be keeping an eye out for little ones.
Mole hills
The bunnies are not the only ones busy burrowing at the moment, there are also mole hills popping up. Last year we had a few in the meadow, but this spring they are closer to the house and the veg patch, even pushing up earth between the stones around the raised beds.
We’ve been scooping up the lovely aerated soil that the mole pushes up into hills and using it in various places, including topping the veg beds. It has a much finer tilth than the somewhat lumpy compost I’ve been spreading around, so hopefully will suit new seed sowings.

Blossom old and new
My favourite thing in the garden at the moment is the blossom. We’re lucky to have several fruit trees and this year the blossom has been particularly gorgeous! I think it’s the good run of fine weather we’ve had - very little wind or rain to shake the petals from the trees. First up was the plum tree, now the pear tree is looking magnificent, and the apple blossom is just getting warmed up.
This year there is a new kid on the block! We’ve happily given refuge to an apple tree that had been gifted to someone in the family but didn’t work in their garden. It has been in a pot for a few years but now has its roots in the soil. I’m not sure all the grafts have survived, but part of the tree is blossoming now, so hopefully it will settle in and be happy here.
Hi Greta,
Love to see your posts when they come through!
I don't think we live so far away from each other, if you ever need a volunteer in the garden I'd love to help!
